There was never music in my home as a child. My parents never sang or danced. They never had fun or went to parties and rarely smiled or laughed. Yet they forced us (3 brothers) into extended and advanced musical lessons. We all had to learn an instrument. We studied with accomplished instructors in both the playing of the instruments and in music theory. We joined the school band and orchestra. We never liked any of it and rebelled against it the best we could by sneaking away and playing ball instead which was strictly forbidden by my father. This started in 3rd grade, and by 11th we had all completely quit. I can still read and write music, but it has not been a part of my life for over 3 decades.
