As a varsity HS soccer coach and 40 year official myself I understand this game very well, and by the way would have paid big money to have the sight of L.Atkins playing. I also played in high school and college. Soccer will never succeed as a professional sport in the USA because it is inferior in oh so many ways to our 4 major sports. It’s fun to play, and great for all those suburban little boys and girls who can’t participate in other other sports.
I rooted for the US women also so don’t get me wrong. Soccer needs major rules revisions. I created a version that I call American Rules Soccer. I’ve been working on it for many years. I have a rule book and can justify all my changes. Soccer people are intransigent regarding changing their game. I have encountered vehement resistance when presenting my case to them. But all great geniuses are called heretics or fools when they first go against dogmatic entrenched systems.
Someday I hope to be revered as the inventor of ARS. Don’t forget that in the early days of basketball there was no dribbling or backboard.
